The Parade
Performance with Brit Moore-Shirley2019
The Parade was an interdisciplinary project centred around recognizing and honouring the emotional labour of older queer generations. The performance acted as a metaphorical Pride March in which two performers carried a designed object around a pre-determined public route: a route combining the official Pride Parade in the city it was performed in, adapted to hit subcultural spots such as cruising grounds and past gay and lesbian buisnesses as learned through oral history with elders.
This work was informed by oral history conducted between Brody Weaver, Chris MacFarlane and Terry Bailey, a conversation between Halifax queers with 20 years between them. We spoke about the legacy of the AIDS crisis in Nova Scotia, local forms of resistance, discretion, cruising and rurality. This project is dedicated to them.
