Brody Weaver and Alexis Nanibush
Site specific installation in Shannon Park, Darmouth, Nova Scotia
Construction equipment, paint, vintl
2018

A collaborative installation conceptualized by Brody Weaver with participation from Alexis Nanibush, this land-based work brings together text from different sources brought to bear onto the surface of a barrier or gate used in construction sites. Complicating a stable or top-down understanding of land and public spaces such as “public” parks, the construction sign bears language from the poetry of Nanibush, text written and posted to the Reddit page of the park, and official messaging from Parks Canada about the site. Shannon Park, the official name of the space, is the nearest piece of land to the Halifax explosion, “Shannon Park” was also home to Turtle Grove, a Mi’kmaq community who inhabited the site beginning in the 18th century.
