Brody Weaver is a media artist, writer and educator currently living between tkaronto (Toronto, ON) and kjipuktuk (Halifax, NS). She has a BA in Art History and Contemporary Culture from NSCAD U with her graduating solo exhibition, The Speaking Subject, at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in January 2023. She is currently a graduate Fellow in the Master of Information program at the University of Toronto, concentrating in Archives and Records Management with a collaborative specialization in Women and Gender Studies.

Brody was a Media Art Scholar at the Centre for Art Tapes in 2022-23 where she made a feature length, collaborative documentary about trans people, health care, and the depth of knowledge that this community holds. This project was screened at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and featured as the Artist Project in C Magazine’s Fall 2023 Issue, curated by Excel Garay. In 2024, she was the inaugural Writer-in-Residence at Eyelevel Artist Run Centre. She has worked in archives and collections, academic and arts-based research, and as a facilitator for art and community-based education programs. As a genderqueer woman, she is entranced by and fixated on the construction of historical and contemporary knowledge about gender, sexuality, medicine, and trauma. Her work across media, installation, and text is research based and often makes use of archives and historical case studies. Across these sites of output, Brody works from a critical standpoint which interrogates the central role that power plays in what is known and knowable, and who is seen as knowing. She is particularly inspired by transfeminist theory, critical race theory, and theories of memory, trauma, and the archive. Overtime, her practise has shifted focus from material to media, with a sensitvity for the overlap of these approaches. Brody seeks to leverage the pedagogical (learning beyond the format and restraints of formalized education) potential of art and visual culture through participatory, collaborative, and community-based processes.

In this exhibition, Brody Weaver presents media artworks created over the past four years that document her sustained investigations into gender and sexuality as they intersect with contemporary and historical life. The title of the exhibition, “The Speaking Subject” is drawn from transfeminist theory that centres the voice of the medicalized trans subject. It signals the production of knowledge by the trans subject who has previously been the subject of knowl- edge produced about her. Through her interrogation of historical figures and case studies across sexology, “Canadian” nationalism, queer history, transgender healthcare, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic she highlight instances whereby knowledge production, co-option, and appropriation come to bare on the uneven distribution of life and death. Three video-based works made between 2019 and 2021 are shown with new(er) installations which detail the institutionalisation of community-based knowledge never intended for our consumption in the forms they now exist in.

“2SLGBTQIA+ historical material is hard to find. Queer communities, for many reasons, do not always leave easily accessed paper trails. Erasure and censorship, both of information and physical space, is a felt problem. Often, queer history and knowledge circulate as whispers and word-of-mouth, between and among those who seek it out. The Nova Scotia LGBT Seniors Archive is the first institutional, dedicated queer archive east of Montreal. This project, made in consultation and partnership with the NS LGBT Archive’s creators, seeks to mobilize and activate the contents of this collection on occasion of its public launch on October 15th, 2020.”

“So, here we are, tracing. We are tracing
different things, but the same things. We are tracing things together, and separately. We are drawing contours, replicas, transcriptions, identities. A
club. A sauna. A photograph of a family member,
a photograph from a family member’s home. A
celebrities coming out letter. An obituary. An icon.
We are drawn to the word tracing because it im-
plies a contemporary subject coming to know,
recreate, or citationally engage with a historical
object, but an object is never just an object. Within this work and writing, we are tracing a queer
subjectivity. We are tracing our queer subjectivities, within their overlaps, points of departure, influences, and affects. This work comes from subjects within the world, making art to speak about
that world; there is little distance here.”

“In the summer of 2018, I curated an exhibition of ten of my close friends.I curated their work together because they are all great artists, but also, because they are all my friends.I like curating, of course, but I like my friends more. And many of the participating artists have connections and friendships as well. I didn't want to separate this from the work. Not because it would be dishonest, but because,It is important that we are friends. It is important that some of us grew up together. It is important that three of us lived together. It is important that we all have strong ties to a basement just down the street.Affect held us together. Affect held our work together.Affect held the room. The Affective Pullpulled me in.”– Curatorial statement

Elder queen Leaky Tuck (any pronouns) reluctantly recounts the demise of her modest drag career to younger queer, Babe. Somewhere between oral history and make-believe, Leaky's melodramatic tale narrates his untimely on-stage breakdown and subsequent runaway to who-knows-where. Indulging in the power that Babe's willing ears and audio recorder supply, Leaky finds herself immersed in the adrenaline of performance, the degradation of trans femininity, and a near-empty pack of cigarettes in his attempt to make sense of her glory days.

In Born in a Body (2023), Elliot Ciz and Brody Weaver present an experimental documentary focusing on trans people and their relationships to healthcare. Structured in three parts, the film features dialogue from interviews with one another and seven community members, bringing viewers and listeners on a journey from Sherbourne Health in Toronto to Clinic 554 in New Brunswick and Truro Pride. Disrupting the medicalization of the trans community, the lived experiences and knowledge of this group position trans people as experts of their own lives, bodies, and (medical) needs to reconsider pathologization, typologies of (in)access, generational differences, systems change, and what might be possible when we see trans healthcare as one component of a larger project of wellbeing.
